20 years of ArcelorMittal Zenica – a company that made a difference in the economy of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina
ArcelorMittal Zenica, a company based in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is the largest producer of long products in the Balkans (Southeastern Europe) with a production capacity of almost one million tons per year, as well as the largest foreign investor in the country. It is one of the key drivers of the economy in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the largest BiH exporters, contributing 2.5% to the GDP of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The factory has an integrated steel production, using iron ore, the process takes place in the Blast Furnace, Sinter Plant, and Steel Plant, while finished goods are produced in the Rolling Mills. ArcelorMittal Zenica mainly uses iron ore from Prijedor, thus providing around 750 jobs in the mine there. In Zenica itself, the Company directly employs around 2,200 people, but the number of indirect employees is around 12,000 due to the large number of domestic companies that base their business on cooperation with us.
Production process
The facilities of the ArcelorMittal Zenica factory comprise an integrated steel production process with the Sinter Plant, Blast Furnace, Converter Steel Plant and Conti Casting for billets, two rolling mills: for Rebar & Wire rod, as well as a plant for the final processing of reinforcing mesh. The Coke Plant was shut down in April 2024, and coke is now being supplied from external sources. The factory is unique in its integrated production facilities, but it also has an electric arc furnace (currently not used in production). ArcelorMittal Zenica mainly uses iron ore from Prijedor, which is located in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

There are more than 550 such local suppliers to whom ArcelorMittal Zenica pays around BAM 700 million annually for services. Some of them, such as Željeznice RS, have 60% of their annual turnover thanks to business with ArcelorMittal Zenica, while Željeznice Fiderežija achieve 20% of their turnover through cooperation with our Company.
Since 2004, the Company has paid a total of BAM 5.5 billion to its suppliers.

Investments
Since its arrival in Bosnia and Herzegovina in December 2004, ArcelorMittal Zenica’s total investments have exceeded BAM 490 million. Out of this, cca BAM 200 million has been invested in numerous projects related to environmental improvement.
ArcelorMittal Zenica has invested BAM100 million in Toplana Zenica, a completely new energy plant that runs exclusively on internal gases (blast furnace gas, as well as the possibility of using natural gas), producing thermal energy for ArcelorMittal Zenica and city heating in Zenica. Toplana Zenica is a joint venture, 50% owned by ArcelorMittal Zenica, 30% by Finnish companies and 20% by the City of Zenica. It is important to note that ArcelorMittal Zenica and Toplana Zenica cannot operate without each other.
This project is equally important for district heating, energy efficiency and environmental protection in Zenica. The ArcelorMittal Group has guaranteed loans from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The Company demonstrated its long-term plans to remain in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2018 by implementing a historic project for this factory, i.e. the overhaul of the blast furnace, which allowed the company to extend the operating life of integrated steel production in Zenica for the next 20 years.

Environment
As already mentioned, since its inception in 2005, the Company has invested more than BAM 200 million in environmental protection projects, including the new Zenica Heating Plant project.
These investments have resulted in significant improvements in environmental protection in Zenica, so that the Company is now 100% compliant with regulations regarding SOX and NOX emissions.
Since November 2021, when Zenica Heating Plant started using only gas boilers and when the use of coal was eliminated, SO2 emissions from the plant have been reduced by around 90%.
Occupational health and safety are priority No. 1, which is why more than BAM one million is invested in this segment every year. Employees have ongoing education and training, both in the field of occupational safety and various other areas that can help them in their daily work.
ArcelorMittal Zenica has so far implemented more than 450 projects and donations in the local community. Since 2005, the company has helped more than 80,000 users in the amount of over BAM 2.5 million.
